PART 3: God's Manifestation in the Holy Spirit
The Triune God, also known as the Trinity, is a central Judeo-Christian belief that defines God as ONE BEING existing in three co-eternal, consubstantial divine beings: the Father (Yahweh), the Son (Yeshua/Jesus), and the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh). While distinct individually, each is fully God, sharing the same divine essence.
Most believers in the church think of the Holy Spirit as a divine power that first arrived in Acts 2 in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. But the Holy Spirit which is called by several names – Holy Spirit, Spirit of God, Spirit of Truth, and the Sevenfold Spirit; has been with Yahweh our God since the very being of time. The Holy Spirit is a force that is a part of Yahweh our God and has always existed with The Father and The Son.
Genesis 1:1-2 (CJB) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was unformed and void, darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the surface of the water.
The Holy Spirit is mentioned 253 times across both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible according to an analysis by OverviewBible.com. Specifically, the Spirit is directly referenced 70 times in the Hebrew Old Testament canon and 183 times in the Greek New Testament writings.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. He is the nature, power and essence of God and has existed through all eternity. He is also a gift that God can impart to the human mind to inspire spiritual growth. And enable that person to become a member of the family of God.
The Bible says that the Holy Spirit is the power of God (2 Timothy 1:7 ), that it leads us into all truth (John 14:17, 26 ), that it enables us to discern spiritual things (1 Corinthians 2:11, 14 ), that it is our guarantee (“seal”) of eternal life in the resurrection (Ephesians 1:13-14 ), and that without it we are “not His”(Romans 8:9). You need God’s Spirit to be a follower of Yeshua and a child of the Most High God!
The Holy Spirit is the third Divine Person of the Trinity and another manifestation of God. Most Christian denominations believe in the Trinity, which consists of God the Father, (Yahweh our God) God the Son, (Yeshua the Messiah) and God the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh). The Holy Spirit dwells with believers, leading, guiding, and empowering them with spiritual gifts. The scriptures describe the Holy Spirit as God’s Spirit and Yeshua’s (Jesus) Spirit. The Holy Spirit is fully God and participates in divine actions.
In Acts 2, in the Upper Room in Jerusalem, the Holy Spirit descended from Heaven and empowered each of the 120 believers in the room, filling them with a power they had never known.
The Coming of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:1-3 (CJB) The festival of Shavuot (Pentecost) arrived, and the believers all gathered together in one place. 2 Suddenly there came a sound from the sky like the roar of a violent wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire, which separated and came to rest on each one of them. 4 They were all filled with the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) and began to talk in different languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. (CJB)
The Holy Spirit is another form of Yahweh’s manifestation in our lives. He is our comforter, guide, our divine navigator helping us discern right from wrong, and leading us toward God’s plans for our lives. The Spirit is our teacher, our indwelling spirit who enables us to live holy and obey the word of God. In John 14: 15-16 (CJB) Yeshua (Jesus) said:
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commands; 16 and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another comforting Counselor like me, the Spirit of Truth, to be with you forever.
We see in the words of Yeshua that the Holy Spirit is a “he.” And in in John 16:12-14 (CJB) Yeshua tells us what the Holy Spirit will do.
12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now. 13 However, when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own initiative but will say only what he hears. He will also announce to you the events of the future. 14 He will glorify me, because he will receive “from what is mine” and announce it to you.
The fruits or characteristics of the of the Holy Spirit that should be reflected in believers are listed in Galatians 5:22-23. They are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-control.
