In the Bible God has named the fourth month of HIS Biblical Calendar as simply, FOURTH MONTH. The name “Tammuz” for the fourth month on the Jewish calendar was adopted after the Babylonian exile, likely around the 5th century BCE. Before the exile, the months were referred to by number (e.g., “the Fourth Month”). The name “Tammuz” is derived from the Babylonian deity Dumuzid (also known as Tammuz), who was associated with agriculture and fertility.
In the Bible, Tammuz refers to a pagan god associated with fertility and agriculture, whose worship is condemned by GOD in Ezekiel 8:13-18.
The Fourth Month on God’s Biblical Calendar is still listed today as Tammuz on the Jewish religious or ecclesiastical calendar with the year beginning with Nisan as the First Month of the year. Tammuz is also the tenth month of the civil year in the Hebrew Calendar.
Exactly who assigned the pagan god name Tammuz to the month on the Jewish calendar is not clear. Why the Chosen People of today would continue to use the name of a pagan god even is impossible for me to understand! If this is Jewish tradition, it is not worth keeping in my opinion.
The Fourth Month is generally 29 days and it occurs on the Gregorian calendar we use in the USA from mid-June thru mid-July. It is a lunar cycle, which is the time it takes for the moon to orbit the earth (around 29.5 days).
Here are just some of the Biblical events that occured in the Fourth Month.
- 3 Tammuz (c. 1272 BCE) –Joshua stops the sun (Book of Joshua, 10:1–15)
- 5 Tammuz (c. 592 BCE) – Ezekiel receives his “Chariot” vision (Book of Ezekiel, 1:4–26)
- 9 Tammuz (c. 586 BCE) – Jerusalem walls breached by Nebuchadnezzar II, a date observed as a fast day until the second breaching of Jerusalem’s walls by the Roman Empire on the 17th of Tammuz (70 CE)[2]
- 17 Tammuz (c. 1312 BCE)[citation needed] – golden calf offered by the Hebrew people, 40 days after the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. In response, Moses smashed the first set of Tablets. This is the first of the five national tragedies mourned on this day.

Ezekiel 8:13-18 (CJB)
He also said to me, “You will see even worse abominations that they are doing.”
He brought me to the entrance of the north gate to Adonai’s house; and there before me were women weeping for Tammuz. “Human being,” he asked me, “have you seen this? You will see practices even more disgusting than these.” He brought me into the inner courtyard of Adonai’s house; and there, at the entrance to the temple of Adonai, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs toward the temple of Adonai and their faces toward the east; and they were worshipping the sun toward the east. He asked me, “Human being, have you seen this? Does the house of Y’hudah consider it a casual matter that they commit the disgusting practices they are committing here, thus filling the land with violence, provoking me still more? Look! They are even putting the branch to their nose! Therefore I will act in fury, my eye will not spare, I will have no pity. Even if they cry loudly right in my ears, I will not listen to them.”
