On the Biblical Calendar the 6th month of the year is ELUL , counting from Nisan as the first month. It is a summer month of 29 days. Elul usually occurs in August–September on the Gregorian calendar.
Elul is called “the month of repentance,” “the month of mercy,” and “the month of forgiveness.” Elul follows the two previous months of Tammuz and Av, the months of the two great sins of Israel, the sin of the golden calf and the sin of the spies. The Jewish people have an interesting phrase to describe this month. They say, “Elul is the month when “the King is in the field,” all can approach Him, and He shines His countenance upon everyone. As you begin to understand the meaning of this phrase, you will see how God wants to relate to you during these days. Through most of the year, a king lived in a palace, protected by armed guards and iron gates. To have an audience with a king you had to make an appointment, learn palace protocol, and dress appropriately. The word “Elul” forms an interesting acrostic. In the Complete Jewish Bible there is a phrase in the Song of Solomon 6:3: “I belong to the man I love, and he belongs to me; he pastures his flock among the lilies.!” In Hebrew, the first letter of each word in that phrase spells out the name of this month: ELUL. Jewish rabbis said it this way, “Elul” is an acronym for the biblical phrase ani ledodi vedodi li — “I am my Beloved’s, and my Beloved is mine.” In other words, the intense love between God and His people comes to the surface during Elul.” This month is when Moses ascended to Mount Sinai to receive the second set of the “Tablets of The Covenant.” These were days when God revealed Himself to the people of Israel with great mercy. This is a good transitional month, which precedes the “fall feasts.” The days from the Feast of Trumpets to the Feast of Tabernacles are the holiest days in the biblical calendar. These are times to prepare ourselves to come into God’s presence and glory. But before the feasts start, we have Elul. God wants to meet with us in a special way and share a time of special intimacy with Him. Elul is a “haven in time,” like a “city of refuge” from the ravages of life. |

Elul – 6th month
(29 days) (August/September) |
During the month of Elul, there are a number of special rituals leading up to the High Holy Days (Feast of Trumpets to the Feast of Tabernacles). It is customary to blow the shofar (ram’s horn or trumpet) every morning (except on Shabbat) from the first day of the month of Elul until the day before the Feast of Trumpets. The blasts are meant to awaken one’s spirit and inspire you to begin the soul searching which will prepare you for the High Holy Days. As part of this preparation, Elul is the time to begin the sometimes-difficult process of granting and asking for forgiveness. It is also customary in Judaism to recite Psalm 27 every day during Elul.
Elul is a picture of the earthly ministry of Jesus / Yeshua. John 1:14 NIV describes Jesus’ coming this way: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” The word “dwelling” is actually the word for “tent” or “tabernacle.” Yeshua /Jesus, the King of the universe left His palace and came to tabernacle among us. He lived here in our field, in a tent of mortal flesh. For 33 years, the King was in the field on earth. |
