Definition: Yahweh is the modern English transliteration for God’s Personal and Divine Name YHWH. Ancient Hebrew texts and early Greek transcriptions of the sacred “four-letter” Tetragrammaton ( י-ה-ו-ה)- Y H W H is pronounced -Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey. This is how the Hebrew letters are often pronounced individually, though some prefer Yod-Hey-Waw-Hey for a more ancient pronunciation. The original pronunciation was largely lost, but “Yahweh” is the generally accepted academic rendering of the Divine Name.
Also commonly referred to in Christianity as “The LORD;” and as God’s personal covenant name; ‘I AM WHO I AM.’
Theological Significance: The most sacred name of God in scripture, rooted in ‘to be.‘ Speaks to His eternal, omnipresent self-existence, faithfulness, and covenant relationship.
